This late-winter scene from Lundy Canyon in the Eastern Sierra Nevada captures the rugged drama of snow-covered peaks under a setting sky. The surface of Lundy Lake rests in the foreground, reflecting the beauty of the canyon floor. I captured this image in early Spring. My son, Brad, was with me, and we were amazed that skiers and snowboarders climbed the steep hills to do their thing! Lundy Canyon is very near ancient Mono Lake. I consider this image meditative, in that it deserves the time for us to realize we weren’t the first visitors. These canyons were carved out from millions of years of glacial movement and erosion. I consider it an honor to be on earth now to see these natural wonders.
I created this moment with a Hasselblad 500cm medium-format camera and Zeiss 80mm Planar lens on Kodak T-Max 100 film to give me the best chance to capture the textures and tones in this landscape. The photograph preserves the timeless interplay of light, shadow, and stone in one of California’s most striking alpine landscapes.
