Stillness and Fury

A very rare and dramatic moment was captured in this black-and-white photograph of an avalanche descending the face of Yosemite Valley’s iconic Half Dome. Taken on one of my earliest winter hikes of my career through the Valley, I was alarmed by a deep, thunderous sound echoing across the granite walls; a natural avalanche, captured mid-fall. I was fortunate to frame the scene by shadowed pines and bare winter branches. The scene speaks to the raw, unpredictable power of nature which is one of the most appealing feelings I get when in the Sierras. I captured this image on a Mamiya 645 medium format camera with a Zeiss 80mm lens, and using Ilford Delta 100 Professional film. This image balances the elegance of analog photography with the intensity of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The swirling clouds and delicate tonal range lend a painterly quality to the cascade of snow around me on that day.
