Storms were forecast for the mid-Sierras, which brings out the drama from the clouds that snake through the granite features of Yosemite National Park. My wife, Lynn, and I traveled from our home in Sacramento to capture emotions that are available in parts of the park I had not been to. We found the stillness in Yosemite Valley during our autumn trip while the clouds amassed. This award-winning, contemplative black-and-white image reveals a lone figure walking quietly along the banks of the Merced River. Mist and cloud drift among towering granite cliffs and pines revealed the stark comparison between them and the tiny figure. The photograph blends classic film texture with serene composition. The tranquil water, reflecting the towering trees and mountain shadows, completes a moment of quiet reverence—a feeling of isolation, wilderness, and inner calm.
I captured this image with my rock-steady Mamiya 645 medium format camera with Zeiss 80mm lens, on Ilford Delta 200 Professional film.
