Heart of the Earth

My travels with my son, Brad, recently reached for the first time an ancient land of rocks carved over millions of years by wind, water, and temperature swings; the granite of the Alabama Hills at the south end of the Sierra Nevada range. It tells a deeper story than what first meets the eye. The Heart Arch is one of its quietest expressions—an opening shaped not by intention, but by time itself. The flow of water over millions of years has almost polished these stones to a shine. At the same time, holes in the rocks have been carved out by the incessant flow. Directly behind me was Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the 48 continuous states, at 24,505 feet.

I photographed this formation with my Hasselblad 500cm and Carl Zeiss 80mm Planar lens, and Kodak T-Max 100 film.
